"We can
always count on his actors
making interesting choices."
-- Lisa Fields, Casting Director
Meet
John Sudol
For
the past thirty years John Sudol has worked successfully as an actor,
writer, artistic director, story editor, independent casting director,
acting teacher and private coach. John started his acting career in 1975
after arriving in California from the east coast. During the next seven years John studied, worked
the LA Theater scene and had recurring roles on both Ryan's Hope and
Capitol. In the late 70's, John started his own theater company (The
3000 Miles Off Broadway Theater Company). At that point, John's career
began to shift from actor to director.
In 1982 John moved to Seattle,
Washington where he founded the 65th Street Theater, "a theater of passion". This move would take up the
next eight years of his life. The 65th Street Theater produced American classics as well as two original pieces a
season. John won Best Director for both "Waiting for Lefty"
and "Of Mice and Men" and several other awards for best
production. During this time, John also founded the Performing Actor's
Workshop. There he trained hundreds of actors, both in Seattle and Portland
- several of whom have since gone on to successful careers in New York as well as
Los Angeles. By the late 80's John formed a partnership with Fern Orenstein (former
Casting Director for Baywatch) and created Casting Northwest. Together
they cast commercials, voice-overs, industrials and a Northwest talent
search for ABC.
By 1990 John had returned to LA. He
opened a studio in Hollywood and continued to teach, act, write and direct. Besides doing theater
John made several guest appearances on Alien Nation, the New Dragnet,
Adam 12, Guiding Light, MOW - The Great Los Angeles Earthquake and a few
never to be seen pilots and independent films.
He also wrote and directed "Love me Tender" and
"Mad Dogs Howling at the Moon", which were produced at the
Complex in Hollywood.
In the mid 90's John's career took an unexpected turn. He lost both his
father and brother. John's belief had always been that the foundation of
art is communication and sharing. This profound experience had left John
unable to do either. For the next 6 years John went from working in
commercial casting, where he cast talent for Kellogg's, Budweiser, Nike,
BMW, Sony PlayStation, Disney, Dockers, California Healthcare,
to name a few, to developing new scripts for Solomon
International Films. Neither of which touched his soul nor inspired him
to share. It wasn't until several years later that an old student and
friend turned manager convinced John to work with some of his clients
that the passion was renewed.
In the middle of 2001, John re-opened
the John Sudol Studio and began training actors both commercially and
theatrically. In Back Stage West's September 19, 2002
article "Choice Training" John was picked as one of the top
acting coaches to study with.
