EIGHT WEEK COMMERCIAL PROGRAM
Many agents and managers have told us that training is the number one factor when considering taking on an actor or bringing them in for an audition. The goal of the Commercial Program is to equip the actor with the skills and information necessary to gain the confidence to succeed in this highly competitive market. Our eight week commercial program is structured as a layering process – each new technique builds upon those that have already been learned. John focuses on the three key aspects of doing commercials – action, dialogue and reaction – as well as how actors can protect themselves in auditions to ensure that they do their best work.
The actor will learn to define his or her type and quality, and incorporate that quality into various types of commercial copy. Given a maximum amount of on-camera time, the actor will learn how to use his slate as a springboard into an audition, work with cue cards and props, and use the camera to pull focus. Also included is identifying the various types of commercials and their goals, breaking down copy so the spot works, finding the actor's obligations, and making the dialogue real. The actor will work with John's proven dialogue techniques and his approach to point of view and words of focus. Special emphasis is given to one of the most difficult and misunderstood audition types, the reaction spot, for which John’s specially developed techniques will give the actor a competitive edge in auditions. $450/8 weeks.
ADVANCED COMMERCIAL ACTING
This ongoing class meets once a week and focuses on putting it all together and keeping the actor’s skills sharp.. This class brings the actor to a whole new level by concentrating on commercials for which they would be called in to audition. Also covered are externals, such as headaches, colds and other physical symptoms. $200/month or $55/class.
REACTIONS WORKSHOP
Reaction auditions are one of the most difficult types of auditions to do well. So much has to be communicated in a short amount of time and the viewer has to read exactly what the character is thinking, without any dialogue. John has developed techniques that will raise the actors booking rate by giving the actor the ability to produce simple and complex reactions on demand. This workshop is for trained actors that have not taken the eight week commercial program or those that want to further develop these important skills. A take home guide and exercises will help actors continue to increase their proficiency through ongoing practice. $100/5 hour intensive workshop.
ONLINE SHOWCASE
The Online Showcase features students who have participated in both levels of the Commercial Program. For each actor, a 30- 45-second commercial is selected that best highlights his or her type and quality. The spot is directed, rehearsed, and taped, and the actor’s best work is posted on the site, along with headshots and resume. Please note that although the Online Showcase is seen by some of the top agents and managers in the business and many of our showcase students have signed with agencies, participation does not guarantee representation. $125.
IMPROVISATION
This four week class has been designed to teach the actor basic improvisational skills, so he or she can better handle improvisational auditions. Through specially designed games and exercises, actors will learn how to create and execute what’s being asked of them in a moment’s notice. $125/month or $70/month, if another class is taken concurrently.
PRIVATE COACHING & CAREER COUNSELING
One-on-one coaching is available for solving acting problems, practicing cold readings, as well as preparing for theatrical and commercial auditions. Each session is tailored to the actor's specific needs. Most sessions are done on-camera. John is also available for career guidance and input. $50/half-hour session or $90/hour.
